Punkt XII

01Overview

Punkt XII is a seminar and retreat house in rural Franconia, offering cultural events, educational seminars, wellness retreats, and guest apartments for groups, families, and individual visitors.

Its website has one clear purpose: help people discover the venue and request a stay or seminar with as little friction as possible.

The previous site was built with WordPress. While it served the center for many years, it had become slow, difficult to maintain, and increasingly limited. This project rebuilt the entire platform from the ground up.

02The old site

The existing WordPress website still worked, but behind the scenes it was creating unnecessary work and limiting what the center could offer online.

   • A heavy theme supported by a growing collection of plugins
   • Large amounts of unnecessary code loading on every page

   • The center welcomes both German and international visitors
   • But the website was effectively German-only
   • Managing multiple languages through plugins proved unreliable

   • Core, theme, and plugins all required regular updates
   • Every update carried the risk of breaking part of the site
   • Simple changes often became more complicated than they should have been

   • Design and functionality were constrained by third-party tools
   • The website no longer reflected the quality of the center itself

03The rebuild

Rather than replacing one WordPress theme with another, we rebuilt the platform from scratch using React for the public website and Django for content management.

Separating the website from the administration system makes the platform easier to maintain, easier to expand, and far more flexible than the previous WordPress installation.

The biggest change wasn't visual, it was ownership.

Instead of adapting the business to fit a theme, every part of the new platform was built specifically around Punkt XII and how the center operates.

04The design

Without the limits of a WordPress theme, we created a bespoke design system that reflects the calm, welcoming atmosphere of Punkt XII.

The new interface combines clean layouts, carefully chosen typography, real photography, and subtle motion to create a modern experience that never distracts from the content.

It also introduced features that were difficult or impossible on the previous site:

• smooth page transitions;
• instant language switching;
• reusable interface components across every page;
• a responsive layout that works on desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Instead of looking like a customised template, the website now feels like a natural extension of the center itself.

05Content made simple

The new administration system is built with Django, giving the center a structured, reliable way to manage its content without relying on page builders or plugins.

Instead of editing pages made up of theme widgets, the team now works with clearly organised content designed around how the business operates.

This includes:

• apartments and accommodation;
• seminars and events;
• general website content;
• reservations and enquiries.

Because the content is structured, it can be reused throughout the website without duplication, keeping everything consistent and much easier to maintain.

06Built for two languages

Supporting both German and English wasn't added afterwards, it was part of the project from the beginning.

Every page is available in both languages, and the website remembers a visitor's preferred language between visits for a smoother experience.

The URLs are also translated, allowing visitors to browse the site naturally in either language.

Managing both languages happens from a single administration system, making future updates much simpler than the previous WordPress setup.

The previous website took around 5.6 seconds before visitors could comfortably interact with it.

The rebuilt site is ready in under half a second, creating a much smoother first impression and making it easier to browse accommodation, seminars, and events without unnecessary waiting.

The improvement is especially noticeable on mobile, where visitors expect pages to respond immediately.

The rebuild also strengthens the site's visibility in search engines by putting the essential technical foundations in place.

The result is a website that's easier for potential visitors to discover, whether they're searching for accommodation, retreats, or seminars.

10Accessibility

Accessibility was considered from the beginning rather than added at the end of the project.

These improvements help make the site more comfortable to use for a wider range of visitors while improving the overall browsing experience for everyone.

The finished website gives Punkt XII a digital presence that reflects the quality of the center itself.

Visitors can discover the venue, browse seminars, explore accommodation, and submit enquiries through a fast, modern interface available in both German and English.

Behind the scenes, the team now manages everything from a single administration system designed around their workflow instead of the limitations of a page builder.
